The Cotswold Village Trail Ultra – 4 Days & 5 Nights

Ready to immerse yourself even deeper in the beauty of the Cotswolds? The Cotswold Village Trail Ultra is an extended 4-day walking experience designed for those who want to explore further, walk longer, and discover more of the region’s most picturesque and historic villages.

Blending classic honey-stone towns, rolling high wolds, and peaceful river valleys, this itinerary offers the perfect balance of challenge and charm.

Day One – Arrival in Moreton-in-Marsh

Arrive at Moreton-in-Marsh train station and make your way to your welcoming B&B. Here, you’ll receive your welcome pack, maps, and detailed route notes. Settle in and enjoy your first evening in this historic market town.

Day Two – Chipping Campden to Moreton-in-Marsh (14.1 km)

After breakfast, a taxi will collect you from Moreton-in-Marsh and transfer you to the elegant village of Chipping Campden — often regarded as one of the loveliest towns in the Cotswolds.

Your walk begins here, taking you through:

  • Broad Campden
  • Blockley
  • The arboretum and falconry centre at Batsford Arboretum

For a shorter option, you may finish at Batsford and take an optional taxi back to Moreton.

Continue onward to Moreton-in-Marsh for your second overnight stay.

Day Three – Moreton-in-Marsh to Stow-on-the-Wold (13.6 km)

Today you cross the open high wolds en route to Stow-on-the-Wold.

Highlights include:

  • The striking Mogul-style Sezincote House
  • A collection of charming rural hamlets
  • Sweeping countryside views

Arrive in Stow before 4pm to enjoy a complimentary cream tea in a traditional tearoom. Spend the evening exploring the historic square and its independent shops and inns. Overnight in Stow-on-the-Wold.

Day Four – Stow-on-the-Wold to Bourton-on-the-Water (9.9 km)

A gentle downhill walk leads you across open meadows toward the idyllic village of Lower Slaughter, before continuing to the ever-popular Bourton-on-the-Water.

With its stone bridges spanning the River Windrush and a wide choice of attractions, Bourton is the perfect place to relax and explore. Enjoy an afternoon visiting museums, browsing local shops, or dining in one of the many excellent restaurants. Overnight in Bourton-on-the-Water.

Day Five – Bourton Circular to Naunton & The Slaughters (18 km)

Today’s 18 km circular walk is the most challenging of the tour — ideal for keen walkers.

From Bourton-on-the-Water, your route takes you to:

  • Naunton
  • Lower Slaughter
  • Upper Slaughter

This rewarding trail explores one of the most scenic and popular walking areas in the Cotswolds. Expect peaceful river valleys, traditional stone cottages, and classic English countryside.

If preferred, the walk can be shortened by turning back at Lower or Upper Slaughter.

Return to Bourton-on-the-Water for your final overnight stay.
